Rondônia is a state located in the northwest part of Brazil. It is known for its rich natural environment. The state's capital city is Porto Velho.
Rondônia shares its borders with other Brazilian states: Acre to the west, Amazonas to the north, and Mato Grosso to the east. To the south, it borders the country of Bolivia. The state was named after Cândido Rondon, a famous Brazilian explorer.
Other important cities in Rondônia include:
- Ji-Paraná
- Ariquemes
- Vilhena
- Cacoal
Geography and Economy
Most of Rondônia is covered by the dense jungle of the Amazon Rainforest. However, since the 1970s, about three-fifths of this jungle has been cleared. Today, most people in the state live in cities and towns.
Rondônia is a major exporter of wood. The state also produces a lot of coffee and cocoa. Raising cattle for meat and milk is another very important activity here.
State Flag of Rondônia
The flag of Rondônia was designed by Silvio Carvalho Feitosa. It officially became the state flag on December 22, 1981. The flag uses the same colors as the flag of Brazil: blue, yellow, and green.
The large star in the middle of the flag represents Rondônia as a new state. This star is shown rising into the blue sky. The yellow and green areas at the bottom of the flag symbolize the land of Brazil.
The Akuntsu Tribe
The Akuntsu tribe is one of the unique indigenous groups living in Rondônia. They were first contacted by outsiders in 1995. At that time, there were only seven people left in the tribe. By 2006, their number had decreased to six.
The Akuntsu live in the Igarape Omere region, which is in the southwest of Rondônia. The tribe includes their chief, Kunibu Baba, and other members like Pupak and Ururu. The small size of their tribe means they face challenges in keeping their traditions alive.
