Clifford Osbourne Jarvis (born August 26, 1941 – died November 26, 1999) was an American drummer. He was known for playing two exciting types of jazz music: hard bop and free jazz. In the 1980s, he moved to London, England. He spent the rest of his life there.

About Clifford Jarvis

Clifford Jarvis was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. His father was Malcom “Shorty” Jarvis. Clifford studied music at the Berklee College of Music in the 1950s.

His Early Career in Jazz

Clifford moved to New York City. There, he became a well-known jazz drummer between 1959 and 1966. He recorded music with many famous musicians. These included Randy Weston, Yusef Lateef, and Freddie Hubbard. He also played with Grant Green and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Clifford also worked with musicians who played free jazz. This style of jazz is more experimental and less structured. He played with Sun Ra for many years, from 1962 to 1976. He also worked with Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane.

Moving to London

During the 1980s, Jarvis moved to England. He played with younger musicians there, like Courtney Pine. Clifford was also a music teacher. He taught at Chats Palace Arts Centre in London. He also taught at Pyramid Arts Development in Dalston. Jarvis continued to teach music until he passed away in 1999.
