What is the Fisherman's Club?
The Club de Pescadores is a special place for people who love to fish. It's also a beautiful building that has become a symbol of Buenos Aires. Many people visit it to enjoy the views and learn about its history.
How the Club Started
The club began in 1903. It was built on an old pier. A French company used this pier to unload coal from their boats onto trains. After a while, the company stopped using the pier. It started to fall apart.
Fishermen who loved to fish there decided to fix it up. They also built a small shelter to keep their fishing gear safe. On August 10, 1905, a big storm hit the river. It completely destroyed the pier. But the fishermen didn't give up! They kept meeting and even started holding fishing contests.
Building a New Home
In 1926, the club members decided to build a brand new pier. They also planned a bigger building on it for club activities. The President of Argentina, General Agustín Pedro Justo, approved their plan in 1928.
The new pier was finished in 1930. The main building, which you can still see today, was designed by an architect named José N. Quartino. It officially opened on January 16, 1937. President Agustín P. Justo was there for the opening.
A National Treasure
In 2001, the Club de Pescadores building was declared a national historic monument. This means it's a very important part of Argentina's history and culture. It's now one of the most recognized landmarks in Buenos Aires.
