Jacobus "Co" Westerik (born March 2, 1924 – died September 10, 2018) was a famous Dutch artist. He was known for his unique paintings and drawings. Co Westerik created art that often showed people and everyday life in a special way.
Life and Art
Co Westerik was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on March 2, 1924. He studied art at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague from 1942 to 1947. After finishing his studies, he traveled to the United States in 1948 to learn more about art.
When he came back to the Netherlands, he became an independent artist in The Hague. This meant he worked for himself. He also joined a group of artists called the Verve group. He helped start this group in 1951 with friends like Herman Berserik. The group worked together until 1957.
Co Westerik also taught art to students. He was a teacher at different schools in The Hague from 1954 to 1958. From 1958 to 1971, he taught drawing at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. He also taught at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem between 1960 and 1970.
In 1971, he moved to Rotterdam. He also started a studio in the south of France. He worked in both places until 2010.
Awards and Recognition
Co Westerik won many important awards for his art.
- He received the Jacob Maris Prize three times:
- In 1951 and 1955 for his paintings.
- In 1953 for his drawings.
- He also won the Rembrandt Prize from the city of Leiden.
- Other awards included the State Prize for Visual Arts and Architecture.
- He also received the Cultural Prize of South Holland.
- He won the Hendrik Chabot Price from the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
In 1999, he was honored as a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is a very special award in the Netherlands. In 2005, he became an honorary member of Pulchri Studio, an art society.
Co Westerik passed away on September 10, 2018, in Rotterdam. He was 94 years old.
