Coalburg, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Coalburg, Ohio, is a small area in northwestern Hubbard Township, Trumbull County. It's located at about 41 degrees North and 80 degrees West. Coalburg was never a city, town, or village. It only had a post office, which closed in 1913 because not enough people lived there to keep it open. Even though it was listed in the 1940 census, no one recorded how many people actually lived in Coalburg.

What Was Coalburg Like?

During the late 1800s, Coalburg was home to many miners and their families. These miners worked in the nearby coalfields. The area had a busy business district and places of worship, like churches.

Coal and Railroads

Coal was a very important resource in Coalburg. Several railroads helped transport coal from the mines to large iron factories in Youngstown, Ohio, and other places. This coal was used to make iron, which was important for building things like trains and bridges.

The Big Coal Miners' Strike of 1873

Coalburg became famous across the country during a big coal miners' strike in 1873. During this time, the mine owners brought in new workers to replace the striking miners. These new workers included immigrants from Italy and Sweden, who had just arrived in the United States, and African Americans from Virginia. This event showed how important Coalburg was to the coal industry at the time.
