The Codman House, also known as The Grange, is a really old and cool house located on a 16-acre estate in Lincoln, Massachusetts. It's like stepping back in time! Since 1969, this amazing place has been looked after by Historic New England, a group that helps preserve historic sites.

You can visit the Codman House from June 1st to October 15th. It's open on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. There's a small fee to get in, but it's worth it to explore this historic home.

A Look Inside the Codman House

The main house was first built around 1735. It was designed in a style called Georgian, which was popular back then. A person named Chambers Russell, who helped start the town of Lincoln, built it.

How the House Changed Over Time

Later, in the 1790s, the house got much bigger. John Codman, who was related to Chambers Russell, added more to it. He made it into a three-story house in the Federal style. Some people think that a famous American architect named Charles Bulfinch might have helped with these changes.

Inside the house, you'll find lots of old furniture, family pictures, and art. Many of these items were collected during trips to Europe. Different rooms in the house still show how they were decorated in different time periods. This includes designs by a well-known interior designer named Ogden Codman, Jr..

The Old Carriage House

On the property, there's also a former carriage house. It was built around 1870 and designed by Snell & Gregerson. For a long time, this building was used as a stable for horses and later as an early garage for cars.

What You Can See There Today

Even today, you can still see some cool old things inside the carriage house. These include an old gas pump and a large machine called a lathe. These items give you a peek into how people lived and worked many years ago.

Exploring the Gardens

The land around the Codman House has been farmed almost continuously since 1735. That's a very long time! Today, the grounds also feature beautiful gardens.

Different Garden Styles

There's an Italian garden that was created around 1899. It has lovely flower beds, statues, and a reflecting pool filled with waterlilies. You can also find an English cottage garden that was designed around 1930. These gardens are perfect for a peaceful stroll.

A Recognized Historic Place

The Codman Estate is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It's listed under the name "The Grange." This means it's officially recognized as a special historical site.
