The Codman House, also known as The Grange, is a historic house located in Lincoln, Massachusetts. It sits on a large piece of land, about 16 acres, which is like a big park! Since 1969, this special house has been owned by Historic New England, an organization that helps protect old buildings and places. You can visit the Codman House to explore its history and see how people lived long ago. It's usually open to the public on certain Saturdays from June to October.

Discovering the Codman House History

The main part of the Codman House was first built around 1735. It was designed in the Georgian style, which was popular back then. The house was built by Chambers Russell, who helped found the town of Lincoln.

How the House Grew Over Time

Later, in the 1790s, the house became much bigger. John Codman, who was related to Chambers Russell, added more to it. He changed its look to the Federal style, which was a newer, more elegant design. Some people think that a famous American architect named Charles Bulfinch might have helped with these changes.

Inside the house, you'll find lots of interesting things! There are old family portraits, souvenirs, and beautiful art that the family collected during their travels in Europe. Different rooms in the house show how people decorated their homes in different time periods. You can even see designs by a famous interior designer named Ogden Codman, Jr..

Exploring the Estate Grounds

The land around the Codman House has been used for farming almost continuously since 1735. Today, it's not just farmland. It also has beautiful gardens that you can explore.

The Italian and Cottage Gardens

One part of the estate is an Italian garden, created around 1899. It has lovely flower beds, statues, and a calm reflecting pool filled with pretty waterlilies. There's also an English cottage garden, which was made around 1930. These gardens are perfect for a peaceful walk.

The Historic Carriage House

On the property, you'll also find the old carriage house. It was built around 1870 and designed by Snell & Gregerson. For a long time, it was used as a stable for horses and later as a garage for early cars. Today, you can still see some old items there, like an early gas pump and a large machine called a lathe.

A National Historic Place

The Codman Estate is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it's recognized as a special historic site that should be protected and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
