Journey Through Railway History

This museum tells the story of trains and railways in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. It covers a long time, from the early 1800s when the first simple tracks were built. These early tracks were called plateways. The museum's story goes all the way to the 1970s, when the Dean Forest Railway started up.

The museum also shares interesting facts about other railways. These include the Wye Valley Railway, the Severn & Wye Railway, and the railway station at Monmouth Troy railway station.

Exploring the Museum's Exhibits

The museum is set up in an old building called a goods shed. This is where trains used to load and unload goods. There's also an old GWR signal box. A signal box is a building where railway workers controlled the train signals and tracks.

You can also see a miniature railway, which is a fun, smaller version of a real railway. There's a short piece of real track too. On this track, you'll find a special train called a Peckett locomotive. It's a steam engine, number 1893, and it stands with old train cars that belonged to the GWR.

The Coleford Railway Line

The museum is located along the old Coleford Railway line. There was also another train station in Coleford. This second station was opened by the Severn and Wye Railway.
