The College Women's Club was a special group for women. It was started in 1920 in Berkeley, California. This club helped the community in many ways. For example, they created Berkeley's first cooperative day nursery. This was a place where parents could leave their children during the day. The club also helped students by setting up scholarships. These scholarships helped young people pay for their education.
The Club's Building
The building where the College Women's Club met was very important. It was built in 1928 by an architect named Walter T. Steilberg. The building was designed in the American Craftsman style. This style is known for its use of natural materials and handcrafted details.
Changes to the Building
Over time, the College Women's Club sold their building. After they sold it, the building changed its purpose. It became a rooming house, which is a building with many rooms rented out to different people. Later, it also became a sorority house. A sorority is a social club for female college students.
In the early 1990s, the building was carefully fixed up and made new again. This process is called restoration. After its restoration, the building became the Berkeley Hotel.
A Special Landmark
The building, which is now the Berkeley Hotel, is considered very important. In 1979, the city of Berkeley named it a Berkeley Landmark. This means it is a historic place that the city wants to protect. A few years later, in 1982, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places.
