History of the College
How it Started
The College of the Muscogee Nation began in 2004. It was created by a decision from the Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council. This council is like the government for the Muscogee (Creek) people.
In November 2009, the Muscogee (Creek) citizens voted. They decided that CMN should become a "constitutional college." This means the college's governing board, called the Board of Regents, became a part of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation's Constitution. This made the college very important and stable.
Important Milestones
CMN is a member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. This group helps tribal colleges work together. The college also became a "1994 Land-Grant institution" in 2014. This means it gets special support from the government for certain programs.
As of November 2020, most of the teachers at CMN were American Indian or Alaska Native. About 90% of the faculty identified this way. Also, 60% of the teachers were women.
The college received its first official approval, called "Initial Accreditation," in November 2016. This approval came from the Higher Learning Commission. Accreditation means the college meets high standards for education. This approval was renewed in December 2020. The next review to check its standards is planned for 2026–2027.
How the College is Run
The College of the Muscogee Nation is guided by its Board of Regents. This board is very important. It is protected by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Constitution.
The board has five members. All members are Muscogee citizens. They meet every month to make decisions for the college. The Principal Chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation chooses these board members. Then, the National Council must approve them.
What You Can Study
CMN offers many different courses. Some are general education classes, like math or writing. Others are specific to the Muscogee Nation. Students can earn associate degrees or certificates here. These programs focus on what the Muscogee Nation needs or is interested in.
For example, students can study Mvskoke studies. They can also learn the Mvskoke language. This helps keep the Muscogee culture and language strong. CMN is one of only seven tribal colleges in the U.S. that offers a degree in tribal administration. This degree helps students learn how to manage tribal governments and organizations.
Most of the students at CMN are American Indian or Alaska Native. In Fall 2023, about 74% of the students were from these groups. This shows how important the college is to the Muscogee community.
Life on Campus
The college campus is about 37 acres. It is located on Loop 56 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The campus has several important buildings. There is an educational building where classes are held. There is also student housing for those who live on campus.
A Student Center provides a place for students to relax and gather. The campus also has a cultural community garden. This garden helps students connect with traditional Muscogee practices.
