Colon is a small village in St. Joseph County, which is in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is known as the "Magic Capital of the World." In 2020, about 1,199 people lived there. The village is located within Colon Township.

History of Colon

Colon was first planned out in 1844. It officially became a village in 1904.

Geography of Colon

Colon covers about 1.73 square miles (4.50 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, but a good part is water. The village is located between two lakes, Sturgeon Lake and Palmer Lake. These lakes are connected by a small channel. The St. Joseph River is also close by.

People and Culture

Colon is famous for being the "Magic Capital of the World." The United States Congress even officially recognizes it this way! Many famous magicians have lived or been buried here, including Harry Blackstone, Sr..

Magic Companies

Colon is home to the Abbott Magic Company. This company was started in 1934 by magicians Percy Abbott and Recil Bordner. Abbott Magic has a store, a showroom, and a factory where they make magic supplies and new tricks. Magicians from all over the world buy their products.

Other magic companies in Colon include FAB Magic Company and Sterlini Magic Manufacturing Company.

Magic Shows and Events

During the summer, you can watch weekly magic shows at Abbott Magic Company and FAB Magic. Every August, more than 1,000 magicians and magic fans come to Colon for "Abbott's Magic Get-Together." This is a four-day convention where people share magic tricks and learn from each other. The convention often doubles the village's population! Each day ends with a magic show at Colon High School.

Local Magic Theme

The sports teams at Colon High School are called the "Magi." Their mascot is a white rabbit wearing a black top hat, which is a classic magic symbol. You'll also find that some local shops use the "magic" theme in their names.

Amish Community

Colon also has a small Amish community. The Amish are a group of people known for their simple lifestyle and traditional ways.

Demographics

In 2010, about 1,173 people lived in Colon. Most of the people living in the village were White. A small number of people were from other racial backgrounds. About 1.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

The average age of people in the village was around 39.7 years old.
