Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Colony is a small, unincorporated community in Knox County, Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Colony Township. You can find Colony at a specific spot known as the K&V junction.

The Story of Colony

Colony has an interesting past! It was first settled in the early 1840s. Back then, it was known as Kentucky Colony. A group of four or five pioneer families from Kentucky were among the first people to settle in this part of Knox County. They built their homes about two miles northeast of where Colony is located today.

An important part of any community is its post office. A post office called Colony was opened in 1848. This was a vital place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years, helping people stay connected. It remained in operation until 1907.
