The Columbus Fireman's Park Complex is a special place in Columbus, Wisconsin. It's a park with several historic buildings and structures. These include the old Pavilion, a building called Rest Haven, the Boy Scout Cabin, and two important gates. The park became a city park in 1915. The local fire department helped make it a great community spot.

A Park for Everyone

Fireman's Park was created to be a place where everyone in Columbus could gather. The city's fire department took on the project. They wanted to build a park that the whole community could enjoy. It quickly became a popular spot for many different activities.

The Pavilion: A Place for Fun

The main building in the park is the Pavilion. It first opened in 1917. This building was mostly used for community dances. Imagine people gathering there for music and fun! But it also hosted many other events. It was a central spot for the community to meet and celebrate. The Pavilion was built by hand, showing the hard work of the people involved.

Rest Haven: A Stop for Travelers

Another important building is called Rest Haven. It opened a few years later, in 1923. This building was designed by a famous architect named Alfred C. Clas. He used a style called Prairie School architecture. Rest Haven was a resting place for people traveling by car. In those days, many "auto tourists" visited the park. They used Rest Haven for cooking and to use the restrooms. It was a helpful stop on their journeys.

Historic Gates and Walls

The park also has historic walls and gates. The west wall and gate were built in 1917. These structures are also part of the park's history. They mark the entrance to this special place. They show how the park was carefully planned and built over time.

A Recognized Historic Site

Because of its unique buildings and history, the Columbus Fireman's Park Complex is very important. On February 25, 2004, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's officially recognized as a place worth protecting. It's a reminder of the community spirit in Columbus, Wisconsin.
