The Columbus Historical Society (CHS) is a special group that helps us learn about the past of Columbus, Ohio. It's like a history detective, keeping track of everything that has happened in the city! Their office and museum are located in the Franklinton neighborhood. The society is working hard to buy Engine House No. 6. This old fire station would become their very first permanent home.
What Can You See at the CHS?
The Columbus Historical Society building has cool gallery spaces. Here, they put on many exhibits each year. These shows teach you about local history and art. For example, in 2016, they had an exhibit about Poindexter Village. This was the city's first public housing project. It was a place where many families lived.
The society also helps look after important historical buildings, like:
- Gen. William Henry Harrison Headquarters
- Sullivant Land Office
A Look Back: The History of CHS
The Columbus Historical Society started in 1990. It was created to make sure Columbus's history is remembered.
The society has moved a few times over the years. It used to be on Jefferson Avenue in Downtown Columbus. In 2012, it moved to a space inside the COSI museum in Franklinton. Then, in 2017, the society got its own building. This building is at 717 West Town Street, also in Franklinton.
The society thinks Franklinton is the perfect spot. This area was the first place where non-native people settled in Central Ohio. It's also surrounded by many other historic and cultural sites.
In 2020, the society shared exciting news. They were trying to buy a nearby old fire station, Engine House No. 6. This building would become their first permanent home. The society started working to buy the building in July 2020.
The Columbus Historical Society is also helping to restore the Old Port Columbus Terminal building. This was the original airport terminal for what is now John Glenn Columbus International Airport.
