The Columbus Police Memorial is a special monument in Genoa Park, Columbus, Ohio, United States. It honors police officers who have died while doing their job. The memorial has the names of these brave officers carved into it. It is also a place where people gather for memorial services. The memorial was officially dedicated on May 26, 2000.

The first ideas for the memorial's design came from Thomas Raymond Hayes. He was a police artist, not an officer. In 1979, he was shot and became paralyzed while arresting two teenagers. He passed away on January 20, 2011, at age 61. His name was later added to the memorial. This was because his death was linked to the injuries he got while serving.

About the Memorial

What it Looks Like

The monument is about 15 feet (4.6 meters) wide and 10 feet (3.0 meters) tall. It is made from a type of stone called Barre Grey granite. It also has shiny black sections. In the middle, a tall pillar stands on the base. On top of this pillar is a bronze badge. This badge is like the one worn by the Columbus Division of Police. It has a black band, which is a sign of mourning.

Below the badge, there is a plaque. It has a special message carved into it:

SERVED FAITHFULLY
SACRIFICED VALIANTLY
REMEMBERED ETERNALLY
DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF OUR
FELLOW COLUMBUS POLICE OFFICERS
THIS 26th DAY OF MAY 2000

Honoring Heroes

The memorial has three large stone slabs. These slabs are built into the base of the monument. They have white letters carved into them. These letters list the names of police officers who died while on duty.

One of the most recent names added was Steven M. Smith. He was a SWAT officer. His name was carved on May 11, 2016. Officer Smith was shot in Clintonville on April 10, 2016. He passed away three days later from his injuries. His name is the 56th name on the memorial.
