The Story of the House

Columbus Tuttle came to Lapeer in 1853. Soon after, he built a house on this very spot. Before 1860, he started a planing mill in Lapeer. A planing mill is a place where wood is smoothed and shaped.

At first, his mill served only the local area. But as Lapeer grew, and railroads were built, Tuttle's business expanded. He began to supply wood products to a much wider market.

In the 1880s, the lumber industry started to slow down. Columbus Tuttle changed his mill to make finished and decorative wood products. In 1890, he decided to build a brand new home on his lot. He hired Daniel Wadsworth to construct this beautiful house. Tuttle lived here until he passed away. After that, another local lumberman, Frank R. Cutting, owned the house. In 1948, the house was changed into doctor's offices.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Columbus Tuttle House is made of wood. It is built in the Queen Anne style. This style is known for its unique and fancy look. The house sits on a strong stone foundation.

It has many pointy roof sections, called gables. The outside of the house is decorated with cool designs. You can see sunburst panels and fancy shingles. There are also fan-shaped windows and windows that look like steps. The front of the house has a part that sticks out a little. A porch was added in 1905, right next to this sticking-out part. This enclosed porch has special windows above the doors. These windows have small, colorful pieces of glass.
