Kids Encyclopedia Facts

"Come to the Funfair" (originally called "Funfair") is a song written for the 1968 movie musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Even though most of the song was cut from the final movie, its musical theme can still be heard. This happens right after the character "Caractacus Potts" (Dick Van Dyke) sings "Hushabye Mountain". The music then inspires Potts to get the idea to earn money by cutting hair at the funfair. You can hear the music as carnival workers walk by in the distance. The famous Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman wrote this song.

The Song on Stage

The song "Come to the Funfair" was brought back for the 2002 stage musical of the same name. It became a big dance number that helped move the story along. Gillian Lynne created the dances for this part of the show. The director, Adrian Noble from the Royal Shakespeare Company, gave the song a special, unique feel. This was partly to honor the original movie's director, Ken Hughes, and his fresh way of telling the story. In the stage musical, a siren whistle is also part of the song.
