The Compañía Cervecera de Puerto Rico is a big company in Puerto Rico. It used to be known as Cervecería India. This company makes different kinds of drinks. You can find it in Mayagüez, a city on the west coast of Puerto Rico. Their most famous drink is called Medalla Light.
History of the Company
This company started on November 2, 1937. Three brothers, Alfonso, Sabino, and Ramón Valdés Cobián, founded it. They were inspired by their father, Don Ramon Valdés. He had started an electricity and ice company in Mayagüez in 1910.
In 1938, the company released its first drink, called Cerveza India. At that time, there were other local drink makers in Puerto Rico. But the Valdés brothers worked hard. Alfonso, who was the chairman and president, helped the company grow. It became the biggest drink maker in Puerto Rico. They made both canned and bottled drinks.
In the late 1970s, the company decided to make new kinds of drinks. They needed to offer a lighter drink with fewer calories than their Cerveza India. Until then, their factory in Mayagüez only made one type of drink.
In 1985, their main competitor, Corona, stopped making drinks. This was a big chance for Cervecería India. They were doing very well after launching their new drink, Medalla Light, a few years before. In October 2009, the company changed its name back to "Compañía Cervecera de Puerto Rico."
From 2002 to 2017, Camalia Valdés was the president and CEO of the company. Then, in 2017, Grace Marie Valdés took over as president and CEO. The company also works to support art and culture in Puerto Rico.
What They Make
The most popular drink from this company is Medalla Light. It is a light-colored drink. The company also makes Malta India. This is a non-alcoholic drink made from barley. It's a bit like a sweet, dark soda.
In 1940, they started making Orange Crush and Old Colony sodas. In May 2010, the company announced a new drink called Silver Key Light. It came out on June 1, 2010. They also launched Magna, another special drink, on August 1, 2011. On November 5, 2019, their very first drink, Cerveza India, was brought back for a short time as a special edition.
