Discovering the Waltham Armory
The Waltham State Armory is on the west side of Waltham. It stands at the corner of Curtis and Sharon Streets. The main part of the building has two floors and a basement. There is also a smaller, single-story section at the back.
What the Armory Looks Like
The front of the building has a central entrance that sticks out. The main doorway is set back inside a rounded arch. Thin, tall windows are placed evenly on the front. A decorative wall, called a parapet, rises above the roof. The corners of the building have special brick designs called quoining.
Inside the Historic Armory
Inside, the armory was designed for different activities. The basement had a firing range for target practice. The main floor had a large room for meetings and a drill hall for training. On the second floor, there were offices and a library.
Who Built the Armory?
The armory was built in 1908. It was designed by a famous architecture firm called Hartwell, Richardson & Driver. This firm also designed other important buildings in Waltham. The armory was built with high-quality materials and excellent craftsmanship.
It was the last armory in Massachusetts to have such a unique design. Rufus Lord, who owned and built Lord's Castle, built the armory. The cost to build it was $45,000.
