What's in a Name? The Story of Congo Volcano
The name "Congo" comes from a special type of monkey called the Mantled howler monkey. Locals call these monkeys "Congo monkeys." You can often find these monkeys in the area around the volcano. Their loud howls can be heard from far away! People have been using the name Congo for this volcano since the 1800s.
Exploring the Congo Volcano's Features
The Congo Volcano is a type of volcano called a stratovolcano. This means it's built up from many layers of hardened lava, ash, and rocks. It covers an area of about 25 square kilometers (about 9.6 square miles). It is located about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) north of the Poás Volcano.
The crater of the Congo Volcano is open on its northern side. Over time, a lot of rain has caused the volcano to erode, or wear away. This rain also helps to create the María Aguilar river and its valley.
