Conrad Heighton Leigh was an English artist and illustrator, born in 1883. He was also a member of the Brighton Arts Club.
His Life and Art
Conrad Leigh was born in Brighton, Sussex. This happened on May 27, 1883. His father, Thomas Leigh, was a surgeon.
Conrad went to Rostellan House School in Brighton. He also attended the Old Brighton Grammar School. Later, he studied art at the Brighton school of art. This school is now part of Brighton University. His teacher there was William H. Bond. Conrad then continued his art studies in London at the Slade School of Art. He also studied in Paris at the Académie Julian.
Conrad Leigh became well known for his art. He often painted sporting scenes and military subjects. Many of his works were used as pictures in books. They also appeared in magazines and on popular postcards. This was mainly in the early 1900s. His art was regularly seen in famous magazines. These included the Strand Magazine, The Daily Mirror, Wide World, and the Windsor Magazine.
In the early 1900s, Conrad Leigh painted a special panel. It was for a dining room in London. This room was at the Hall of the Carpenters' Company. Sadly, the hall was destroyed in a fire in 1941. But most of Conrad's pictures survived.
In 1915, a company called John Gilkes and Sons hired Leigh. They made wallpaper. He created designs for their wallpapers. He also designed a very famous poster for them in 1920. This poster is still popular today. People buy copies of it in print stores. Original posters from 1920 are very rare and valuable.
Leigh also designed another famous poster. This was for the Brighton Carnival. The carnival took place around the 1920s. This poster has also been copied and sold in stores. Conrad Leigh worked at 68 Grand Parade in Brighton. This location is now part of the Brighton University's art and architecture department. The exact date and place of his death are not known. However, records suggest he may have passed away in March 1958 in Brighton, at age 74.
