Conrad Leroy Mallett Jr. (born October 12, 1953) is an important person in Michigan's legal and business world. He currently works as the main lawyer for the city of Detroit, called the Corporation Counsel. Before this, he was the Deputy Mayor of Detroit, helping Mayor Mike Duggan. He also served as a judge on the highest court in Michigan, the Michigan Supreme Court, from 1990 to 1999. He was even the chief judge of that court in 1997 and 1998.
Conrad Mallett Jr.'s Career
Conrad Mallett Jr. has had a long and interesting career. He served as a judge on the Michigan Supreme Court from December 21, 1990, to January 2, 1999. During this time, he was the chief judge in 1997 and 1998. He was the first African American to hold the top judge position on the Michigan Supreme Court.
Mallett also worked in the business world. He was on the Board of Directors for Lear Corporation. For twenty years, he was a top leader at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC). He was the president of DMC's Sinai-Grace Hospital from 2003 to 2011. He also temporarily led DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in 2017. Before these roles, he was a partner at a law firm in Detroit called Miller Canfield.
In May 2020, Mallett was chosen to be the Deputy Mayor of Detroit. He officially started this job on May 25, 2020. He played a key role in helping the city respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, Mallett was named the Corporation Counsel for the City of Detroit. This means he became the city's main lawyer. At first, some members of the Detroit City Council had questions about his nomination. His name was temporarily taken off the list. However, after looking for other candidates, he was nominated again. After several months of discussions, his appointment was approved on April 26, 2022.
