History of the Consulate
The Polish Consulate General in New York City has a long and interesting history. It was the very first office Poland opened in the United States.
Early Years and Opening
The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York City officially opened on August 14, 1919. This was a big step for Poland, showing its presence in the United States.
A Time of Change
In July 1945, after World War II, the Consul General at the time, Sylwin Strakacz, decided to leave his position. This happened because he did not agree with the new government in Poland.
A New Home
Years later, in December 1972, Poland bought a special building. This building is the Joseph Raphael De Lamar House. It is located at 233 Madison Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. Since then, the Consulate has been located in this historic building.
