Convento de la Santísima Trinidad y Purísima Concepción (Écija)
Convento de la Santísima Trinidad y Purísima Concepción, a historic building in Écija.

The Convento de la Santísima Trinidad y Purísima Concepción is a special old building in Écija, a town in the Province of Seville, Spain. People often call it the Marroquies convent. It is run by a group of nuns called the Franciscan Conceptionists. This convent is very close to another important church, the Iglesia de la Limpia Concepción de Nuestra Señora.

A Look at Its History

How the Convent Started

Back in 1582, four sisters from a very old family in Écija decided to do something special. These sisters, named Luisa, Catalina, Ana, and Francisca Marroquí, wanted to create a place for nuns to live and pray. They worked hard to make their dream come true.

Building and Blessing

The new church and convent building was finished several years later. On May 21, 1596, the entire complex was officially blessed. This meant it was ready for the nuns to move in and begin their lives there.

A Protected Treasure

Many years later, on November 17, 2009, the convent was given a very important title. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. This means it is a special historical or artistic site that the government protects. It's like saying, "This building is a national treasure!"

What You Can See Inside

The convent has a simple but beautiful design. It still has its original angular belfry, which is a tower where bells are kept. Inside, you can find many amazing things.

Art and Decorations

The convent is home to a wonderful collection of art. You can see many paintings, altarpieces (decorated screens behind the altar), and sculptures. There is also beautiful jewelry. These artworks show two important styles:

  • Moorish art: This style comes from the time when Moors lived in Spain. It often features detailed patterns and designs.
  • Andalusian Baroque art: This style is from a later period in Spain, known for its dramatic and detailed decorations.

All these pieces help tell the story of the convent and its long history.
