Conya Doss (born June 13, 1972) is an American singer, songwriter, and music producer. She is also a teacher. Many people call her "The Queen of Indie Soul." This nickname means she is a top artist in the soul music world who releases her music independently, without a major record company.

In the late 1990s, Doss was part of a music group called Lyrik. After the group ended, she started her solo career. Her first album, A Poem About Ms. Doss, came out in 2002. A song from that album called "Coffee" became popular on radio stations in her hometown of Cleveland.

In 2004, Doss started her own record label, Conya Doss Songs, Inc. This allowed her to have full creative control over her music. She has released many albums through her own label, sharing her unique style of R&B and neo-soul music with the world.

Early Life and Education

Conya Doss was born in Cleveland, Ohio. From a young age, she was interested in the arts. She attended the Cleveland School of the Arts and graduated in 1990.

After high school, Doss decided to pursue a career in education. She earned her teaching license and became a teacher for students with special education needs in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. She has balanced her work as a teacher with her music career for many years.

Music Career

1995–2004: Starting Her Journey

Conya Doss began her professional music career in 1995 by singing background vocals for another artist. A few years later, she and her childhood friend Stacy Richardson formed a duo called Lyrik.

After Lyrik, Doss worked behind the scenes with the girl group 3LW. She helped write their song "I Think You Should Know" and arranged the vocals for another song on their first album.

In 2002, she released her first album, A Poem About Ms. Doss. The album's single "Coffee" was a local hit in Cleveland. In 2004, she released her second album, Just Because, on her own record label.

2005–2013: Gaining Recognition

Doss's third album, Love Rain Down, was released in 2006. Her fourth album, Still... (2008), featured the single "What I'd Do." This song was her first to appear on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, reaching number 79.

The success of "What I'd Do" earned her a nomination for "Best Underground Artist" at the BETJ Virtual Awards. In 2008, she also won Female Vocalist of the Year at the Soultracks Readers' Choice Awards.

She continued to release new music, including the albums Blü Transition (2010) and A Pocketful of Purpose (2012). The song "Don't Change" from A Pocketful of Purpose also made it onto the R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

2014–Present: Continued Success

Conya Doss has continued to create and release music for her fans. She released her seventh album, Seven: VII, in 2015. This was followed by Clear in 2018 and Through Rose-Colored Glasses in 2021. She remains an important and respected artist in the indie soul music scene.

Personal Life

In 2010, Conya Doss had a son named Landon Blu. She named her fifth album, Blü Transition, after him.

Helping the Community

Conya Doss is dedicated to helping others. She mentors teenage girls and is a strong supporter of causes like breast cancer awareness, HIV/AIDS awareness, and mental health.

She has performed at events to raise money for charities, such as the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. She has also worked with BET's Rap-It-UP campaign, which focuses on health awareness. In 2013, she joined the singer Brandy Norwood and Civil Rights leader Julian Bond for a march and rally in Ohio to support important community promises.
