Cooper Lake State Park is a fun place to visit in Texas. It's about three miles (5 km) south of a town called Cooper, Texas. The park is right next to Jim Chapman Lake, which used to be known as Cooper Lake.

This big park actually has two different parts:

  • The Doctors Creek unit is on the north side of the lake. You can find it in Delta County.
  • The South Sulphur unit is on the south side of the lake. This part is in Hopkins County.

Cooper Lake State Park is a newer park, and it offers lots of cool things to do both on land and in the water.

What to Do at the Park

There are many ways to enjoy your time at Cooper Lake State Park. You can see amazing sunsets and beautiful views from a boat, by walking, or even on horseback.

Fun for Day Visitors

If you visit for the day, you can:

  • Have a picnic under tall oak trees.
  • Swim at the sandy beach.
  • Explore the trails.
  • Go boating or fishing on the huge lake, which is about 19,300 acres (7,810 ha) big.

Staying Overnight

If you want to stay longer, you have choices for where to sleep:

  • Cozy cabins.
  • Shelters.
  • Developed campsites (with facilities).
  • Primitive campsites (more like roughing it).
  • Special campsites for people with horses (equestrian sites).

Both the Doctors Creek and South Sulphur parts of the park have cabins available.

Amazing Wildlife

Cooper Lake State Park is a great place to spot animals! Many visitors get to see exciting wildlife, such as:

  • Bald eagles, which are very majestic birds.
  • White pelicans.
  • Wild turkeys.
  • Different kinds of waterfowl (birds that live near water).
  • White-tailed deer.
  • Squirrels.
  • Raccoons.
  • Beavers.

The South Sulphur and Doctors Creek sections of the park cover a large area, about 3,026 acres (1,225 ha). They also have about 31 miles (50 km) of shoreline around the lake, which is perfect for wildlife.
