Range of the Scanty Frog

The scanty frog (Cophixalus exiguus) is a tiny frog. It is also called the dainty nursery frog. You can find it in the rainforests of north-east Queensland, Australia. This little frog is the smallest frog species in all of Australia!

What Does the Scanty Frog Look Like?

The scanty frog is very small. It grows to be about 16 to 19 millimeters long. That's less than an inch!

Its back is usually grey-brown. It has some lighter, pale spots here and there. Some scanty frogs have a wide line down their back. This line gets wider near their eyes.

You might also see a deep red patch on its groin area. There is often a faint "H" shape on its shoulders. A "V" shape can be seen between its eyes. This frog has special pads on its toes. It does not have webbing between its toes or fingers.

Where Do Scanty Frogs Live and What Do They Do?

The scanty frog lives in rainforests. These forests often have many vines and Acacia trees. It likes to stay on the ground. You can often find it hiding under logs or in piles of leaves.

Frog Calls and Mating

During the mating season, male scanty frogs will call out. They climb into trees to do this. They can call from as high as 1.5 meters off the ground. Their special mating call sounds like a series of quick clicks.

Where to Find Them

These frogs live in northern Queensland, Australia. They are found south of a town called Cooktown. The scanty frog lives in an area that is quite separate. This means it is far away from most other frogs of its kind.
