The Corliss–Carrington House is a special old house located at 66 Williams Street in the College Hill area of Providence, Rhode Island. It was built in 1812. This house is important because it's a great example of a well-kept town house built in a style called Adamesque-Federal. It has been named a National Historic Landmark, which means it's a place recognized for its national historical importance.
What the House Looks Like
The Corliss–Carrington House is a big, three-story building made of brick. It has brownstone decorations around its edges. The front of the house has five sections with windows. The corners of the house are decorated with brownstone blocks.
The windows also have brownstone decorations around them. Each window has a special flat arch made of brownstone with a decorative stone at the top. The middle three sections of the front have a two-story porch. The first floor of the porch has fancy metal columns, and the second floor has decorated wooden columns. The main front door has narrow windows on each side and a rounded window above it.
Inside, the house has a common layout for homes from that time. There's a wide hallway in the middle with two rooms on each side. An archway with a decorative window separates the entrance area from a spiral staircase. This staircase leads up to the second floor. The living room (parlor) on the right side of the entrance is the most beautiful room. It has original wallpaper with Chinese designs and fancy wooden decorations. These designs might have been created by John Holden Greene. The decorations around the fireplaces in these rooms were changed later to a style called Greek Revival.
History of the House
John Corliss, a well-known businessman from Providence, built the house between 1810 and 1811. When it was first built, it only had two stories. In 1812, Edward Carrington bought the house. He was the one who added the third floor and the front porch.
The house stayed in the Carrington family until 1936. Then, it was given to the Rhode Island School of Design. The school sold the house to private owners in 1961. Because it is a private home, it is not open for the public to visit.
The Corliss–Carrington House was officially named a National Historic Landmark in 1970. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in the same year. In December 2019, a businessman from Rhode Island, Lorne Adrain, bought the house. He plans to use it as the main office for his program called "Global Fellows in Courage."
