Cormega was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Queens. As a child, he was friends with other future famous rappers. These included Nas, Havoc, and Capone. His music often talks about friends and family he lost.
Music Career
Starting Out in the 1990s
Cormega began appearing on songs in the early 1990s. He was featured on "Going Straight Up" by Hot Day. He also appeared on "Set It Off" in 1991. While he was in jail, rapper Nas mentioned him in a song. This song was called "One Love" from the album Illmatic (1994). This helped Cormega get noticed.
After leaving jail in 1995, Cormega wanted to rap seriously. Nas included him on a song called "Affirmative Action" in 1996. This song also featured AZ and Foxy Brown. It was the first time the group The Firm appeared together. Cormega signed with Def Jam and recorded an album. It was called The Testament. However, he was later replaced in The Firm by another artist, Nature. This caused a disagreement between Cormega and Nas. His first album was then put on hold.
Building His Own Path in the 2000s
In 2000, Cormega was free from his contract. He decided to start his own record company. He named it Legal Hustle Records. Cormega released his first official album, The Realness, in 2001. Many songs on this album talk about feeling let down. Nas responded to Cormega on his song "Destroy and Rebuild." Cormega then released more songs like "A Slick Response."
Cormega's next album, The True Meaning, won an award. It was named 'Underground Album of the Year' by Source Magazine. In 2004, he released Legal Hustle. This was a collection of songs featuring artists from his own label. In 2005, he finally released The Testament on his own label.
On December 22, 2006, Cormega joined Nas on stage at a concert. They performed together, showing that their past disagreements were over. In 2006, he also released an album with Lakey the Kid. It was called My Brother's Keeper.
In 2007, Cormega released a DVD called Who Am I?. It showed different parts of his life. His album Born and Raised came out on October 20, 2009. The first song from it was "Journey."
