Oksusu-cha (Hangul: 옥수수차), or corn tea, is a popular Korean tea. It is made from corn. This special drink is naturally sweet and has no caffeine. People in Korea often enjoy it, especially in winter.
There are two main types of corn tea. Oksusu-cha can be made from corn kernels. Oksusu-suyeom-cha (Hangul: 옥수수수염차), or corn silk tea, is made from the silky threads found on a corn cob. Sometimes, corn tea is even made from a mix of both!
Along with barley tea, corn tea is often served for free in many Korean restaurants. It's a common drink that takes the place of water.
In a region of Korea called Gangwon Province, corn tea has a different name. It is called gangnaengi-cha (강냉이차). Gangnaengi is the local word for "corn" in that area. Families in Gangwon Province drink this tea throughout late autumn and winter.
How to Make Corn Tea
Making oksusu-cha is quite simple. Traditionally, corn kernels are first dried. Then, they are roasted until they are nicely browned.
After roasting, these corn kernels are boiled in water. They boil until the water turns a lovely yellow color. Once the tea is ready, it is strained. The boiled corn kernels are then removed. Corn tea is naturally sweet. However, some people add a little sugar if they want it even sweeter.
You can easily find roasted corn kernels in Korea. They are sold in grocery stores, traditional markets, and supermarkets. You can also find them in Korean grocery stores in other countries. If you prefer, you can buy tea bags that contain ground corn. These make it even quicker to prepare.
Corn Tea Blends
Oksusu-cha is often mixed with barley tea. This blend is popular because the natural sweetness of the corn helps balance the slightly bitter taste of barley. It creates a smooth and enjoyable drink.
