Cornélie Lydie Huygens (born June 13, 1848 – died October 31, 1902) was a brave Dutch writer. She was also a social democrat and a feminist. This means she believed in equal rights for everyone and fair treatment for workers.

Who Was Cornélie Huygens?

Cornélie Huygens was born in a place called Haarlemmerliede in the Netherlands. Her mother passed away shortly after she was born. So, her aunt, Jeanne Marie Huygens, helped raise her. Her aunt was friends with Mina Kruseman, another important feminist.

Early Life and Writing

Cornélie started writing at a young age. She became known for her articles about women's rights. In 1877, she published her first novel. This made her a recognized writer.

A Pioneer in Politics

In 1896, Cornélie made history. She joined the new Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP). She was the very first woman to become a member of a political party in the Netherlands. Because of her strong beliefs and actions, people sometimes called her the "Red Lady."

Cornélie was a very active thinker and speaker for socialist ideas. She believed that society should be fair for everyone. She worked hard for women to have the right to vote. Before her, women's rights were mostly discussed by wealthy women. Cornélie helped connect women's rights with the fight for workers' rights. She showed that everyone, no matter their background, deserved fairness.

Later Life and Legacy

Cornélie Huygens believed that marriage was not always fair to women. However, in 1902, she married Ignazius Bahlmann. He was a German businessman who had translated one of her novels. Sadly, Cornélie passed away later that same year in Amsterdam. She left behind a legacy as a strong voice for change.
