Corra Castle is a cool old castle from the 1500s. It's now mostly ruins, but it still stands proudly near New Lanark, Scotland. This castle is special because it looks out over Corra Linn, which is one of the amazing waterfalls called the Falls of Clyde.
In 1967, Corra Castle became a scheduled monument. This means it's a really important historical site that is protected by law.
Discover Corra Castle
Corra Castle is also known by a few other names, like Corrax, Corax, or Corehouse Castle. It sits on the Corehouse Estate. The castle was built a long time ago, in 1572.
Why Was Corra Castle Built Here?
The people who built Corra Castle picked a super strong spot. It's surrounded by steep cliffs on three sides. This made the castle almost impossible to attack! It was a very safe place to live.
The castle also had a special design feature called a ha-ha. A ha-ha is like a hidden ditch that keeps animals out without blocking the view. This meant people inside the castle could see the beautiful countryside without any fences in the way.
Who Lived at Corra Castle?
For a while, Corra Castle was home to a part of the Somerville family. They were a well-known family in Scotland.
A writer named David Brewster mentioned the castle in his book in 1832. He wrote that the ruined castle of Corra was once where the Somerville family lived.
