Covert Way is a special natural area in the London Borough of Enfield. It's the only place in Enfield that has been officially named a Local Nature Reserve. This means it's protected because of its important wildlife and plants.

What is Covert Way?

Covert Way is a beautiful green space that covers about 7 hectares. To give you an idea, 7 hectares is roughly the size of 10 football fields! It's located right on the southern edge of Enfield. You can find it between a road also called Covert Way and a larger natural area called Monken Hadley Common in Barnet.

Why is Covert Way Important?

Besides being a Local Nature Reserve, Covert Way is also part of a bigger protected area. It's known as the Hadley Wood Golf Course and Covert Way Field. This whole area is considered a "Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade I." This fancy name means it's one of the most important places in the borough for nature. It's recognized for its amazing variety of plants and animals.

Discovering Nature at Covert Way

Covert Way is a mix of different habitats, which are like different types of homes for wildlife.

Woodland Wonders

A big part of Covert Way is covered by semi-deciduous woodland. This means the trees lose some of their leaves in autumn, but not all of them. This type of forest is home to many interesting creatures. You might spot busy woodpeckers tapping on trees or even shy muntjac deer moving through the undergrowth. If you visit in the warmer months, keep an eye out for beautiful butterflies. Two special kinds found here are the white-letter hairstreak and the purple hairstreak butterflies.

Grassland Gems

Beyond the trees, Covert Way also has open grassland areas. These grassy spots are just as important for nature. Here, you can find some very rare and unique plants and insects. One special plant is the adder's-tongue fern, which is not often seen. You might also discover the four-spot orb weaver spider. This spider is locally scarce, meaning it's not common in many other places nearby. These rare species show just how special Covert Way is for protecting biodiversity.
