Early Life and Music Journey
Coy Bowles was born and grew up in Thomaston, Georgia. This town is in the central part of Georgia. He started playing the guitar when he was 11 years old. By the time he was 13, he had his own band. The band was called Betty Doom. They played punk rock and rock-n-roll music. They performed at local churches and birthday parties. Coy went to public school as a kid.
College and Meeting Zac Brown
Coy went to college at West Georgia College. He studied biology there. This is where he first met Zac Brown. Just before he was going to graduate, Coy made a big decision. He decided he wanted to be a musician instead of a biologist. He took a year off from school. During this year, he practiced playing music for eight hours every day!
He worked hard to get into Georgia State University's School of Music. He was accepted into their Jazz Studies Program. While studying jazz, he also played music in the Atlanta area. He performed with different jazz and blues bands.
Starting His Own Band
After graduating from college, Coy started his own band. It was called Coy Bowles and The Fellowship. One day, his band opened a show for the Zac Brown Band.
