What is Coyuca de Catalán?
Coyuca de Catalán is an important city in the state of Guerrero. Being the "municipal seat" means it's like the capital city for its local region. This is where the main government offices for the municipality are found. People come here for official business and to connect with local leaders.
How Coyuca de Catalán Got Its Name
The city was originally just called Coyuca. It got its longer name, Coyuca de Catalán, to honor a brave person named Nicolás Catalán. He was the son of Antonia Nava de Catalán and her husband, also named Nicolás Catalán. Young Nicolás Catalán sadly lost his life in this area during a battle in the Mexican War of Independence. This war was a very important time when Mexico fought for its freedom from Spain. Adding "de Catalán" to the name helps remember his sacrifice and the history of the region.
