Crato's Early History

The area where Crato is now was first explored in the 1600s. This was done by Capuchin Friars, who were a type of Catholic priest. After exploring the region, they started a mission. They named it "Mission Miranda." This name honored a local tribal chief. The chief had been baptized with the name Miranda.

Later, the mission's name changed. It was first called "Miranda." Then, it became known as "New Cariris." These names show the early history of the region. They also show how the area developed over time.
