The Crawford House Artist's Studio is a historic building in Carroll, New Hampshire. It was built in 1880. This building was once an artist's summer home and studio. It is a great example of Stick style architecture. This style uses decorative wooden patterns. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it's an important historical site. The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) has fixed it up. Now, it is used as a bunkhouse. It is part of their Crawford Notch Highland Center.

What is the Shapleigh Studio Like?

The old Shapleigh Studio is located at the AMC Highland Center. This center is near the top of Crawford Notch. It sits on the west side of U.S. Route 302 in Bretton Woods. You can find it between the main parking area and the center's main building.

The studio is a single-story building. It is made of wood. It has a pointed roof, called a gabled roof. The outside is covered with horizontal wooden boards. These are called clapboards. Each of its long sides has a part that sticks out. This part also has a small pointed roof. The ends of the main roof have special wooden designs. These are typical of the Stick style. Some roof peaks have extra fancy wood decorations.

The windows are usually large. They have 16 small panes on the top and 16 on the bottom. There are also smaller windows on the sides of the building. A covered porch runs along the western side. This is where the main entrance is located.

Who Used the Studio?

The studio building was built in 1880. It was made for Frank Shapleigh. He was a famous painter. Shapleigh was known for his beautiful White Mountain art. He lived and worked in this studio until 1894.

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) restored the building. As part of this work, they moved it to a new foundation. This helped to protect the old structure. Today, it serves as a place for people to sleep. It is a bunkhouse for visitors to the AMC Highland Center.
