Credo Reference is a company that helps people find information online. It's like a huge digital library filled with many different books, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. Libraries, schools, and even some companies can subscribe to Credo Reference. This means their students or members can use all the information for free! Credo Reference offers access to over 700 online books from more than 70 different publishers.

The Story of Credo Reference

Credo Reference started its journey in 1999. The company has offices in Oxford, England, and Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. For a while, the company was known as Xrefer, but it changed its name to Credo Reference in 2007.

How Libraries Use Credo Reference

Libraries like those in schools, universities, or public places can sign up for Credo Reference. Once a library subscribes, anyone who uses that library can access all the information Credo Reference offers without paying extra. Librarians, who are the people who manage libraries, can choose which specific books and resources they want their users to have access to. They can even change their choices during their subscription period.

From Free Access to Subscriptions

Between the years 2000 and 2003, Credo Reference (when it was called Xrefer) had a free website. This free site was supported by advertisements, and it was a competitor to other free information sites like Wikipedia. However, around 2003, there was a big change in the internet world, sometimes called the "dot com bust." This meant that many internet companies had less money from advertising. Because of this, Xrefer decided to stop its free service. Instead, they launched a paid version called Xreferplus on June 17, 2003, which is what Credo Reference is today.
