The Crescent Mill, also known as Merchant Mill No. 3, is an old cotton factory in Fall River, Massachusetts. It stands at 54 Front Street. Built in 1872, it shows off a beautiful Italianate style of architecture. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Today, it's used for different kinds of light industrial work.

What is the Crescent Mill?

The Crescent Mill is located in the middle of Fall River. You can find it at the corner of Pleasant and Front Streets. This factory is a long, rectangular building with four stories. It measures about 339 feet long and 74 feet wide.

How was the Mill Built?

The mill is made from rough-cut Fall River granite. This is a type of stone found in the area. The building's style is called Italianate. It has a tall, six-story tower made from smoother, dressed granite. The top floor of the mill is special. It has no columns holding up the ceiling. Instead, the ceiling hangs from the roof's support beams.

History of the Crescent Mill

The Crescent Mill Corporation built this factory in 1872. Lafayette Nichols, the company's treasurer, is given credit for its design. Benjamin Covel was the first president of the company.

What did the Mill Produce?

The mill used steam power to run its machines. It started with 33,280 spindles, which are parts of spinning machines. The factory made brown sheetings and fine fabrics. These were types of cloth.

Changes Over Time

In 1893, the mill was sold to Merchants Manufacturing Company. It then became known as Merchant's Mill No. 3. Merchants had two other mills nearby. Sadly, those mills were destroyed by a fire in 1934. The Crescent Mill stopped making textiles in 1931.
