What is the Darling Lily?
The Darling lily is a type of plant that grows in the drier parts of Australia. It is known for its pretty flowers and its ability to survive in tough conditions.
A Plant with Many Names
This plant has several common names. It's called the Darling lily because it grows near the Darling River. It's also known as the Murray lily and Macquarie lily for similar reasons, as it's found near the Murray and Macquarie Rivers.
Food for Indigenous Australians
For a very long time, Indigenous people in Australia have known about and used the Darling lily. In the Cloncurry area of North Queensland, they called this plant Boomarrah.
An old book from 1889, called 'The Useful Native Plants of Australia', shares some interesting facts. It mentions that Sir Thomas Mitchell, an explorer, saw this plant growing everywhere during one of his trips. He said the ground was covered with its ripe fruit. Indigenous people ate a lot of this fruit and loved it. The fruit was about the size of a plum.
