Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana (1651-1725) was an important Spanish painter. He was known for his amazing Baroque style. He is considered the most famous Baroque painter in the Canary Islands.
Biography
His Early Life
Cristóbal was born in La Orotava, Tenerife, in 1651. He was welcomed and raised by a kind woman. Later, he moved to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. On June 15, 1671, he married María Pérez de Vera there. Just one year later, at only twenty years old, he was already working as an apprentice in his own art workshop.
Moving and Family
In 1679, Cristóbal returned to Tenerife after his mother passed away. He settled in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. In 1686, he married María Perdomo de la Concepción. They had at least six children together.
His Artworks
Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana created many important religious artworks. These included large altarpieces and paintings. Some of his most famous pieces are the altarpiece for the old Basilica of Candelaria. He also painted several images of the Virgin of Candelaria. In 1724, he even restored a painting by Juan de Roelas. This painting belonged to the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
His Later Years
Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana passed away in 1725. He died in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful Baroque art.
