The Crookwell Wind Farm is a special place in Australia. It was the very first wind farm in Australia to connect to the main power grid. This happened way back in 1998.

This wind farm is located near Crookwell in New South Wales. It has eight large wind turbines. Each turbine can make 600 kilowatts (kW) of power. Together, they can produce 4.8 megawatts (MW) of electricity. That's enough power for many homes!

When it was first built, the Crookwell Wind Farm was the biggest in Australia. The energy it made was sold to customers by a company called Great Southern Energy. Today, the wind farm is owned by Tilt Renewables.

Crookwell 2 Wind Farm: A Bigger Project

Because the first wind farm was a success, a much bigger project was planned. This new project is called Crookwell 2 Wind Farm. It was officially opened in November 2018.

How Big is Crookwell 2?

Crookwell 2 is much larger than the first wind farm. It has 28 wind turbines. Each of these turbines is very powerful, making 3.4 MW of electricity. This means the whole farm can produce a huge 95.2 MW of power.

The turbines at Crookwell 2 are also much taller. Their central part, called the hub, is 95 meters (about 312 feet) high. The blades are also very long, creating a rotor diameter of 130 meters (about 427 feet). The very tip of the blade can reach 160 meters (about 525 feet) into the sky!

How Much Energy Does Crookwell 2 Make?

Crookwell 2 is expected to generate a lot of clean energy. It can produce around 300 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity every year. This is enough to power many thousands of homes.

The wind farm started making electricity in August 2018. By December 2018, it was working at its full power.
