The Cropp River: A Record-Breaking River

Where is the Cropp River?

The Cropp River starts high up in the mountains at Galena Ridge. It then flows down to meet the Whitcombe River. This area is part of the Westland District in New Zealand.

The Wettest Place on Earth?

The Cropp River area is famous for its incredible rainfall. It's actually one of the top five places in the world with the highest average rainfall each year!

Imagine this: on December 12-13, 1995, a massive 1,049 millimetres (41.3 in) of rain fell there in just 48 hours. At the time, this was a record for New Zealand.

But that record didn't last forever! On March 25-26, 2019, even more rain fell. A new record of 1,086 millimetres (42.8 in) was recorded over the Cropp River in just 48 hours. This shows just how much rain this special river can experience!
