Crystal Marie Fleming (born November 26, 1981) is an American sociologist and author. She is a full professor of sociology and Africana studies at Stony Brook University. Fleming has written or edited four books. Her work focuses on topics like race and white supremacy.

Growing Up and School
Crystal Marie Fleming was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She grew up there with her mother. Her family was part of a Black Pentecostal church.
College and University Studies
In 2004, Fleming graduated from Wellesley College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and French. She wrote a special project called Performing Blackness: Symbolic Boundaries and Aesthetic Distinctions among Spoken Word Poets in Boston.
She then went to Harvard University. In 2007, she earned a Master of Arts degree in sociology. She continued her studies at Harvard and received her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in sociology in 2011. Her Ph.D. paper was about how people remember French Atlantic slavery.
Awards for Her Work
Fleming's Ph.D. paper won an award in 2012. It was the Georges Lavau Dissertation Award. This award is given by the American Political Science Association. It recognizes excellent research on French politics.
Her Career as a Professor
Crystal Marie Fleming is a professor at Stony Brook University. She teaches sociology and Africana studies. Before this, she was a visiting professor in France. In 2015, she taught at Charles de Gaulle University – Lille III.
