The Cuban yellow bat (scientific name: Dasypterus insularis) is a special kind of bat that belongs to the Vespertilioninae family. This family includes many common bats found around the world.

Scientists used to think this bat was just a type of northern yellow bat. That's because they are quite similar in how they live and what they eat. However, now we know the Cuban yellow bat is its own unique species!

Where Does the Cuban Yellow Bat Live?

This bat is endemic to Cuba. This means it is only found naturally in Cuba and nowhere else in the world! Specifically, you can find it in the Las Villas Province, near a city called Cienfuegos.

Why is This Bat Important?

The Cuban yellow bat is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. The IUCN Red List is like a worldwide report card that tells us which animals and plants are in danger. Being "vulnerable" means its population is shrinking, and its home range (the area where it lives) is quite small. This makes it important to protect these amazing creatures!
