The CUBE (which stood for Centre for the Urban Built Environment) was a special art gallery in Manchester, England. It was a place where you could explore ideas about architecture and the "built environment." The built environment includes all the buildings, parks, and spaces that people have created around us. CUBE showed off amazing exhibitions, mostly featuring cool photos and models of buildings. It also had a bookshop filled with books about design and how cities are planned.

What was CUBE?

CUBE was more than just a gallery; it was a hub for learning about how our cities and towns are designed. It focused on the "urban built environment," which means everything from skyscrapers to small parks in a city. The gallery aimed to help people understand the world around them better, especially the buildings and spaces they use every day.

Exhibitions and Displays

CUBE was famous for its interesting exhibitions. These shows often displayed:

  • Photography: Pictures that captured the beauty and challenges of urban spaces.
  • Architectural Models: Small-scale versions of buildings or city plans, showing how they would look.
  • Multimedia: Videos, interactive displays, and digital art that brought design ideas to life.

These exhibitions weren't just for experts; they were designed to make architecture exciting for everyone, including young people interested in how cities work.

The Bookshop

Inside CUBE, there was a unique bookshop. It wasn't just any bookshop; it specialized in books about:

  • Architecture: Books on famous buildings, architects, and different styles.
  • Built Environment: Guides to understanding how our surroundings are shaped.
  • Planning: Books about how cities are organized and developed.
  • Other Design Forms: Topics like graphic design, product design, and more.

It was a great place to find resources if you were curious about design or thinking about a career in building or planning.

Why CUBE Closed

CUBE was supported by the University of Salford's School of the Built Environment. This university department helped fund the gallery and its projects. However, in October 2013, the funding that supported CUBE was stopped. Because of this, the gallery had to close its doors. Even though it's no longer open, CUBE left a lasting impact on how people in Manchester thought about architecture and their city.
