Culbin House was a large, important house located in the Culbin Sands area of Moray, Scotland. It was near the town of Forres. This house was the main home for the powerful family who owned the land around Culbin.
The Story of Culbin House
Early Owners
The land where Culbin House stood was first home to the family of Richard de Moravia. He was an ancestor of the Murrays of Culbin. His family settled in this part of Scotland around the late 1100s.
Later, in the 1400s, the estate changed hands. A woman named Gyles Murray, who was the heir to the land, married Thomas Kinnaird. This meant the Culbin estate then belonged to the Kinnaird family.
Buried by Sand
The last owner of Culbin House from the Kinnaird family was Alexander Kinnaird. In 1694, something amazing and sad happened. Huge sand dunes began to move and cover the farmland around the house. Eventually, the sand even buried Culbin House itself!
Because of this natural disaster, Alexander Kinnaird had to leave his home and the estate. Today, you cannot see any part of Culbin House above ground. Its remains are still hidden deep under the shifting sand dunes.
