Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cuthbert Hely was an English lutenist and composer who lived in the early 1600s. He played the lute, a stringed instrument like a guitar, and wrote music.

About His Life

Not much is known about Cuthbert Hely's life. Historians believe he learned to play the lute from older musicians. These teachers might have been from the same time as the famous composer John Dowland. If this is true, Hely might have been born around the year 1570.

For a while, people thought Hely taught the lute to a nobleman named Lord Herbert. They also thought Hely put together Lord Herbert's special book of lute music. However, these ideas are probably not correct. Lord Herbert himself said he learned the lute mostly on his own. Also, Hely's music in Lord Herbert's book was added much later, around 1639-1640.

It is also unclear if this composer is the same Cuthbert Hely who lived in a town called Ludlow, England, during that time.

His Music

Cuthbert Hely's music is quite rare today. Only nine of his pieces are known to exist.

  • Eight of these pieces are found in the lute book that belonged to Lord Herbert. These include four fantasias (free-form pieces), three preludes (introductions), and one sarabande (a slow dance).
  • One other piece, an "air" (a song-like tune), is found in a different old music book from around 1650.

Even though there are only a few pieces, Cuthbert Hely's music is considered very important. It shows some of the best English lute music from the 1600s. His style tried to mix the "Golden Age" music of the Elizabethan era with the newer Baroque style. His music often has a deep and sometimes sad feeling, similar to the works of earlier composers like John Dowland.
