The Cyanea platyphylla is a very rare flowering plant. It belongs to the bellflower family. People also call it the puna cyanea or flatleaf cyanea. In Hawaiian, it is known as haha, just like other plants in the Cyanea group.
This special plant only grows on the island of Hawaii. There are fewer than 100 of these plants left in the wild. Because it is so rare, the government lists it as an endangered species. This means it needs special protection to survive.

What is Cyanea platyphylla?
The Cyanea platyphylla is a type of Hawaiian lobelioid. It grows as a shrub and can reach up to 3 meters (about 10 feet) tall. That's taller than most grown-ups!
Flowers and Appearance
This plant has beautiful flowers. They can be white, red, or yellowish with red stripes. These colorful blooms make the plant stand out in the forest.
Where Does it Live?
The Cyanea platyphylla likes to grow in wet forests. You can find it on the eastern sides of some of Hawaii's famous volcanoes. These include Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Kīlauea. These areas get a lot of rain, which the plant needs to grow.
Why is it Endangered?
The main reason Cyanea platyphylla is in danger is because its home is changing. This is called habitat degradation.
Threats to its Home
- Feral Pigs and Cattle: Wild pigs and cows roam through the forests. They can eat the plants or stomp on them, destroying young plants and their habitat.
- Introduced Plants: Other plants that are not native to Hawaii have been brought in. These "exotic" plants can grow very fast and take over the space and resources that Cyanea platyphylla needs. They can outcompete the native plants.
Protecting these rare plants helps keep Hawaii's unique nature safe for the future.
