Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dáire mac Fiachna is an important character in ancient Irish stories, especially those from the Ulster Cycle. He was a powerful cattle-lord from Ulster, known for owning a very special animal: Donn Cuailnge, the famous Brown Bull of Cooley. This bull was so important that a huge conflict, known as the Táin Bó Cuailnge (meaning "Cattle Raid of Cooley"), was fought over him. Dáire mac Fiachna was also related to Conchobar Mac Nessa, a famous king in these old tales.

Who Was Dáire mac Fiachna?

Dáire mac Fiachna was a wealthy and respected lord in ancient Ulster. His family connections linked him to important figures like King Conchobar Mac Nessa. He even appears in another old story called the Táin Bó Regamon. In this tale, he is described as a great man wearing a red cloak and carrying a staff made of hazel wood. He was seen with the mysterious goddess, the Morrígan, who first introduced him by a strange name before revealing his true identity as Dáire mac Fiachna, the owner of the legendary Brown Bull.

The Famous Brown Bull

The Brown Bull of Cooley, Donn Cuailnge, was not just any bull. In ancient Ireland, owning many cattle, especially strong and fertile ones, showed how wealthy and powerful a person was. Donn Cuailnge was known for his incredible strength and value, making him one of the most prized possessions in all of Ireland.

Queen Medb's Desire

The story of Dáire mac Fiachna and his bull is central to the Táin Bó Cuailnge. It all began when Queen Medb of Connacht discovered something surprising. Her husband, Ailill, owned a bull that made him much richer than her. Queen Medb, being a proud and powerful ruler, wanted to be just as wealthy as her husband. She decided the best way to do this was to get Dáire mac Fiachna's magnificent bull, Donn Cuailnge.

A Deal Gone Wrong

Queen Medb sent messengers to Dáire mac Fiachna with a very generous offer. She promised him land and treasure if he would lend her the Brown Bull for one year. At first, Dáire mac Fiachna agreed to this deal. However, the Queen's messengers became careless and started boasting. One of them said that if Dáire mac Fiachna hadn't agreed, Queen Medb would have simply taken the bull by force anyway.

When Dáire mac Fiachna heard this disrespectful comment, he was very angry. He felt insulted and immediately changed his mind, refusing to lend the bull. Because Dáire mac Fiachna backed out of the deal, Queen Medb decided to take the bull, Donn Cuailnge, by force. This decision led to the famous "Cattle Raid of Cooley," a huge war that involved many heroes and battles across Ireland.
