The company started in 1975. It was first called Dan Carter, Inc. At first, it helped other cheesemakers. But soon, it began making and selling its own cheese. In 2003, its name changed to DCI Cheese Company.

DCI Cheese Company was bought by the Fairmount Food Group in 2005. It is still one of the top cheese companies in the U.S. In 2011, another cheese company, Saputo Inc., bought DCI Cheese Company.
